Undertow (1993) EXPANDING on the promise of Opiate, Undertow saw the band stretch out further, particularly on Bottom (which featured a spoken word passage by Henry Rollins) and the piano-destroying, carrot-killing maelstrom-and-soundscape of closer Digustipated. although pretty much every track's amazing. Highlight tracks are the anti-censorship rally Hush (which came with a censor-baiting film clip), the brilliant think-for-yourself religion-kicker Opiate, and the churn-and-roll of Sweat. According to guitarist Adam Jones, Opiate is "more slam and bang" than the expansive prog-metal boundary-pushing that followed but it's still a pummelling thrill-ride that hints at things to come thanks to Jones' Zeppelin-meets-Sabbath riffs, Danny Carey's exemplary drumming, Paul D'Amour's propulsive metallic bass grooves and Maynard James Keenan's coo-to-a-howl vocals. Comprising four studio tracks, two live numbers and a secret song (The Doors-ish piss-take The Gaping Lotus Experience), it may not boast as many mind-bending time signatures or any sprawling epics but it certainly hints at the thought-provoking future that lay ahead. Opiate (1992) TOOL certainly aren't your average metal band, but they're at their most straight-forward on their relentless debut mini-album.

And now that we've probably offended the hardcore Tool lovers, let's look at their amazing career and their rise to the position of one of the most progressive, cerebral and amazing heavy acts ever. The nervousness comes from the fact that Tool fans are a die-hard bunch - in some circles of rock they are regarded as the most over-thinking, nit-picking and obsessive fanatics in alternative music.

THEY'RE here for the Big Day Out again, but it's with some trepidation that Musicology has decided to tackle Tool, one of the greatest metal bands ever.
